May 5, 2022 – Packinghouse Workers’ Mural

The restoration of the Packinghouse Workers’ mural was followed by a Blues concert and May Day celebration at the Charles A. Hayes Community Center.

The original mural was painted by William Walker in 1974 in honor of the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA). The UPWA was a labor union that fought racial discrimination in the meat packing industry and in local communities.

Grammy-winning blues artist Dom Flemons kicks off the celebration with “Take Me Back to Bronzeville”.

Take me back to Bronzeville, that’s where I want to go…

Take me back to the South Side…

Blues artist and local resident Toronzo Cannon (guitar) performs at the reveal.
